3rd Cousin was birthed in late 2015 with the support of the loyal community built through Chef Lutes’ Kinfolk pop-up series. Lutes presents his rustic yet elegant take on California cuisine from the open kitchen of his 40-seat debut restaurant, with a coziness that will make you feel like a treasured guest at a dinner party.
Lutes fell in love with cooking at a young age in his 350-person farm community of Malden, Illinois, where farm-to-table was a normal daily way of life. He honed his craft at Daniel in NYC and Everest in Chicago before creating this Bernal Heights marvel that fuses familiar favorites with unexpected tastes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does my house account work?
Every 3rd Cousin Family member receives a house account at 3rd Cousin. When you let the staff at 3rd Cousin know that you're a member either through leaving a note on your reservation or telling the staff when you check in, you will have the option to pay for your meal with your house account.
$300 in credits are added to your house account every 3 months. Credits do not expire. If your meal happens to cost more than the amount of credits you have remaining, the difference will be charged to your card on file automatically.
You will still get a receipt for your meal, but you will not settle the bill using your credit card. Please note a 20% gratuity is automatically added to orders made through your house account.
Can I still use my house account if I want to split the bill?
Yes! Just let our staff know that you would like to split your bill and have your portion paid for using your house account. We'll be able to take care of that for you.
Does my membership only cover myself, or can it include a plus one?
If you'd like a plus one to also be authorized to use your house account, please let us know.
In general, you or your plus one can use the house account, and most 3rd Cousin events will allow you to bring a plus one and other guests.
How can I pause or cancel my membership?
You can pause or cancel your membership at any time. Please send us an email to let us know how long you'd like to pause or whether you'd like to cancel.
While your membership is paused, you will not be charged each month and new credits will not be added. You will still have access to your existing credits during this time.
Do my credits roll over?
Yes, your balance never expires and will roll over every 3 months.
